The NJAISA is pleased to announce the first ISA Certified Tree Worker / Climber to be offered in NJ will be on Saturday, May 13, 2006 at the NJDEP Forest Resource Education Center, 370 East Veterans Highway in Jackson, NJ. Steve Chisholm, Jr. and Matt Simons have worked on offering this certification program here in NJ, and their work has paid off.

This inaugural exam will be held at 9:30 am that Saturday morning, with registration at 9 am. The site limits applicants to only 12, and registration is on a first come, first served basis for all those eligible applicants. All applicants need to register with the ISA office (NOT the NJAISA office) by contacting them through phone (217-355-9411) or using the online form which is available at www.isa-arbor.com and follow the links for certification and then tree worker / climber. All registration must be completed by the close of business, Thursday, April 27, 2006. Thank you.

We just had our Western Chapter Tree Worker exam out here yesterday. Western Chapter has been doing this certification for several years now, and I figured that when ISA took it on they would just copy the Western Chapter format. However, I was told yesterday that this is not so. Does anyone know what the difference is between the two? What are the components of the ISA Tree Worker exam?

Congrats Mark on getting the ball rolling in NJ. The Prairie Chapters has been trying to run the practical portion of the exam with our TCC. The setup for the climbing portion could be a bearcat, so the setup time for the TCC could be a good time to do the test.
Leon, I thought the application for the Certified Tree worker spelled out fairly specifically what is expected of the candidates, but I could be wrong. I would bet that the head office could clarify this for you, or maybe even one of the proctors may be able to clear the air.

Duh, the application on the ISA website DOES spell it out pretty clearly. Thanks for pointing out the obvious to me, sometimes I need that.

Actually the skills portion of the two look very similar, although the scoring is different.

I've been certified as a Western Chapter Certified Tree Worker for almost three years now. I've also judged at the last couple of exams in Honolulu and helped setup the trees for the last one.

Are you going to take it in Minneapolis, Guy?

Yeah I thought I may as well. The saturday workshops are good but I've had em all recently in one form or another.

I need to learn some new knots; there's only so much you can do with a bowline and a tlh.
