If you could only have 3 ropes ......

Keeping in the theme of things LOL.

150' 24 strand climber. Preferably, Yale's 11.7
!50' seems adequate in all my work.
200' stable braid in 9/16''
Adequate for almost all heavy work, without being to large for lighter work.
150' of Sampson's 1/2'' Pro Master.
A 3=strand that will take a decent beating. It's cheap, does light to medium rigging well. Also, runs well on natty crotch without glazing.

I find these ''only 3'' series threads may benefit the newcomers in the Arb world.
Post em up.

The only changes I would make are 200’ of Yale 11.7, and atlas instead of stablebraid.
I still run DRT once I get to my tie in point. I may use SRT to get there, depending on the job. I do have a 200' Yale for that SRT rope. Most of the time, I'm doing removals. I spur up and clear what clutter I can with my saw. Tie in DRT and complete my job.

Why the Atlas over Stable braid?

As a contract climber, I like the little extra absorption the atlas has when the guys on the ground get it wrong. Not trying to pass the buck- sometimes they deliberately ignore your instructions, and sometimes things just don’t go as planned.

I like 200’ climbing lines for versatility, and I run into plenty of 100+’ trees. Even with the 200’, I’ve had to bail a few feet off the end of my line on some crane jobs. 3-4’, planned and controlled. Hope I don’t kick a hornets’ nest with that admission.

300-350 ft of low elongation climbing line
300-350 ft of 9/16“ stable braid for rigging purposes.
200-300 ft of 16 strand for taglines, speed lines, and whatever needs might arise.

As a bonus I never lever home without 50+ ft of 7/8”- 1” stable braid for butt hitches.

I've only ever used 3 different climbing ropes with the exception of maybe using a friend's rope once in a while on a job. Mainly because they worked well, so why fix what ain't broke right?

- Poison Ivy
- Yale XTC Fire Climbing Rope
- Blue Ox 12-Strand Arborist Climbing Rope

Started off climbing with the 12-strand Blue Ox rope paired with a prusik hitch. Then upgraded to the Poison Ivy with a hitch climber pulley. I still climb with the Poison Ivy, and also with the Yale XTC Fire rope. The one thing I will say about the Yale XTC Fire rope is it seems to have more flexibility / stretch in it then the Poison Ivy. Not necessarily a benefit if you prefer less.

Probably going to look at trying out some other ropes at some point.

Love my 200' Poison Ivy (the original dark green stuff) for longer SRT ascents with minimal stretch. But I do like a small bit of bounce so have shorter 150' Tachyon Ash and 120' Scion Blue for smaller climbs. Also tried a 100' piece of the big Vortex Cool; really soft, flexible, and comfortable to use, and will fit the adjustable BDB, but damn near impossible to cram it thru my ZigZag.
