Help with Sales Program

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this question, but I assume it is since my question is sales related. I'm in the process of creating the first commission sales position in our company and I'm looking for a little help and advice regarding the details on how to do so. Specifically,

- What is normal pay structure? I assume a combo of base salary and commissions?
- What is normal amount of base salary?
- What about commissions? Do you all pay commission on gross income or profit?
- I assume there are some base levels of profitability that a sales person must meet in order to receive commissions?
- Do you pay for any marketing, materiels, etc for your sales people? Or are they required to generate and pursue their own sales leads?

I would love to hear what you other business owners/managers offer with your sales programs. Any advice, ideas, insights (no matter how small) will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I pay straight commission only, no base salary. 10% of gross sales, not including amounts paid to subcontractors such as stump grinder, crane, loader services and permit fees. Commissions are payable when the job is completed. Sales reps are considered subcontractors and receive Form 1099 at the end of the year. Work week is Sunday to Saturday and payday for that week is the following Friday. I compare gross receipts to paid man hours regularly to make sure we're hitting our target hourly rate. Some jobs make money, some don't, but it all works out in the long term. I provide all leads, marketing materials, business cards, etc., and a gas allowance. Sales reps are expected to brief the crew for every job and be available to deal directly with the clients as needed.
