Electric over hydraulic

I had an odd thing occur this afternoon while dumping.

The cap on my hydraulic take blew while lowering the hoist. I haven't topped off the fluid, since I've had the truck. It almost looks like the cap is designed to do this, as it's a two piece unit. One section threads into the tank, and then the other section which one would grip snaps on top with a piece of foam. These separated, leaving the threaded section as it should be but blew off the upper part of the cap.

What caused this? It's kinda warmer than normal, but not hot. Sign of a bigger problem? I haven't tried raising and lowering the hoist since, and lost about 1/3 of a quart of fluid.

I don’t think I’m low on fluid, as the tank is missing about the same quantity as what blew.

Looks like it’s a vented cap, and I found all the parts. Foam thingy doesn’t look clogged, and it blew the top of the cap off.

It should be noted that it blew after dumping, while lowering the box. Power up, power down. The tank was 100% full after it blew, and it blew when the dump was 80% of the way back down. Level ground.

Now the tank is about 1.5-2 low, I slightly raised it this am on the way to work, and the fluid level went down, and then back up when i lowered.

One thing I did do, and not sure if it’s legit. I some times will toggle the dump up and down to get it to bounce to knock the corners loose. Could toggling the controller cause this?

How are you measuring fullness? Is there a sight-glass or dipstick?
It’s a translucent plastic revisor.

Looked up water hammer effect, and while plausible I doubt that’s what happened, I’d think it would be close to instantaneous to the bouncing. This wasn’t... maybe it sucked a little air and the bouncy caused it to froth?

Have a no haul tomorrow then a few days to tinker with it.

Oil expands when heated. Do you have air space in the reservoir, or filling the reservoir?

Is there an Add/ Full type mark?

So, side story ONE time, I added oil with the box up, no dipstick, no sight-eye, no translucent tank, because the reservoir is hard to get at otherwise.

ONE TIME!

ONCE!

Low oil level can cause aeration and blow fluid out the cap. Fill it up with cylinder retracted or you’ll have the same issue because you’ll have overfilled it.

Along the same line of reasoning:

There may be air entering the pump on the suction side. It ends up collecting in the cylinder. When raising under pressure the air is compressed and when lowering it becomes un compressed and expands rapidly. It is a possibility. Air in a hydraulic system can cause rapid hydraulic cylinder movement and is very dangerous aside from 'cavitation' eating up the pump.

was the truck off when you were lowering?
if so it could have gravity lowered and malfunctioned the pump instead of being electronically lowered.
