Edit: Buffs are actually ok masks

Saw the interview with the guy who did the study on CNN. Said what Anawan relayed and said doubling it makes it better. Just passing on what i heard.

Covid has killed an estimated 770k people world wide as of right now. You claim another pandemic disease is killing more. Which disease are you talking about?
Let's keep it simple and run with the flu; WHO reports ~660k deaths per year from the basic flu, and that's WITH a vaccine! Also note the CDC doesn't record every single flu death so who's to say that numbers anywhere near correct.

In the subject of numbers let's talk a different type of death; suicide. Suicide in just one city of Ohio has jumped 267% since the start of covid 19. So tell me again, if saving people is the goal how are we addressing this statistic?

660k flu deaths in a full year is still over 100k deaths short of what covid has done in half a year. Again, what pandemic disease are you saying is killing more people than covid? As far as the vaccine goes, many viruses evolve and mutate. The flu is one of them. The flu vaccine on the market this year is slightly different from the one that was available last year, or the year prior. This is why they are constantly studying the flu and continuing to track it globally. The vaccine for the flu is not a permafix.

Suicide? What the hell are you talking about? We're talking about pandemic diseases. If you're gonna start throwing everything that causes loss of life into the mix we'll never get anywhere. Auto/road related accidents kill 1.3 million globally per year. I bet you don't bitch about driving your car though. People spread covid just by talking to one another. They don't spread suicide like that. If wearing a trash bag for a pair of pants would get the global suicide rate to zero, I'd fucking wear it. And if you followed the primaries at all this past year, there was someone who tried very hard to address the suicide rate issue: Andrew Yang. And he's still trying. I still follow what this dude is doing because he's the only person who's proposed legitimate, achievable solutions to the issues he's identied. There were other interviews where he gave more specifics on suicide rates in the US and what causes have lead to the increase. You can search for those if you're so inclined. This was his closing statement at one of the debates.

So am I, this pandemic has directly lead to a 267% increase in suicides in Troy Ohio. Because of the draconian mandates / regulations people, especially young people & teens are taking their lives at an alarming increase. A direct cause of this covid bullshit.

False. I highly doubt anyone is leaving a suicide note that says they can't live in a world that makes them wear a mask or stand 6 feet behind the person in front of them at the check out line. How about the fact that minimum wage has not even remotely kept up with the rate of inflation, or the exponential rise in the cost of higher education making it harder to access, or that the coast of living continues outpace minimum wage, or the pharmaceutical industry incentivising doctors to prescribe opioids at record levels, or a lack of affordable and accessible health care that won't bankrupt a family who experiences a major health event? Covid lead to a loss of jobs. The inability of young people to be able to save money when they were employed, coupled with the fact that the economy and our government couldn't adapt to this loss is more likely a causal factor in the uptick of suicide rates. And those problems have been festering long before covid happened. Covid just slapped this country in the face by rapidly exposing problems that have been simmering under the surface for decades. It was gonna boil over eventually.

@Phil, we seem to be at am impasse, in the name of remaining a friendly forum and on the topic this forum caters to let's agree to disagree?

I'm out, neither of us will change the others mind, may as well not have the stress of an internet argument on either of our minds right.

No worries though, we live 500 miles apart so you don't have to worry about my non-mask-wearing ass exposing you to any germs!

@Phil Well said sir.

(I included this in the initial post just to try to curb spread of outdated bad info....)

Apparently that study has basically been debunked, and I regret sharing this initial study at all, but hopefully y’all know it was bc I was just looking out for the better good of folks, and getting info to the right people. I made an assumption that the researchers and reporters would only give us helpful and truthful information in a matter that was vitally important to virtually every human being. My mistake!

One thread I’ve seen in folks replies to the initial study that I’m feeling right now is just a general disappointment that experts on these matters have not given us clear and consistent guidance, and now we are left to chase the most recent article and change our behaviors according to some half baked data. Wtf?

Evo, this new study answers a lot of your questions and sounds like a double layered buff is an effective face covering!

Thanks for the update. Just shows that the "experts" are still unsure about what works and what doesn't. Maybe they will come to an agreement someday.

Guess my buff isn't killing anyone afterall. Imagine that, exactly as I mentioned the initial study didn't even take a week to be found wrong. But fuck me right.
For the record I never challenged you on the fact you were wearing a buff. I took issue with you calling the whole thing political and down playing it. Then I took issue with random statistics you posted about other pandemic diseases and suicide rates.

Just can't be a bigger man and drop it huh @Phil. When do you have time to work on trees when you're setting everyone straight about everything on the internet?

A significant problem at this time is that a lot of journals are rushing to publish papers without them having been peer reviewed. Dr. Michael Osterholm reviews and discards dozens of papers drawing hasty conclusions from poorly designed and conducted studies. Invariably in each of his podcasts of The Osterholm Report, he apologizes on behalf of the public health scientific community, saying something to the effect" We owe the public better published information than this."

I'm crazy efficient at tree work. And I've tried to play point/counter point just as much as you have so we are equally invested in this debate from a time standpoint. You were the first to respond to this thread. Your post was lengthy and full of your thoughts and opinions so I figured you were down to debate. My apologies if debating verifiable statistics against opinion was a bother for you.
