Edelrid Woodpecker Splice

A friend recently gave me a couple of 200' pieces of new Edelrid Woodpecker rope, which is an 11.7 double-braid that is much like Tachyon in that it has 3 additional strands inside the braided core. I was not particularly impressed with the thin, wimpy splice that Edelrid uses for this rope so I tried a standard Tachyon splice and it works great. Like Tachyon you have to pull hard to complete the bury, but the end result is a really nice splice. So if any of you are wanting to try this rope, and don't care if you can pull the splice through a small piece of gear, I suggest you try it with the Tachyon splice.

Here are a few tips: You MUST taper the core in order to pull it through the cover. Use a wire fid for all buries. Massage and hammer the rope liberally to finish the bury. That last inch is tight.

Looks good.. I’m trying to get there. I got good with 12 strand tenex. Now I’m working on 16 strands and 24 strands.

Mainly tachyon ash because I have a short unused hank.

Also working on 16 strand arbor master and Hawkeye

If you can do Tachyon you can do Woodpecker.

this concept was one of the hardest elements to pull off in my early splicing attempts. Getting the technique down to taper the core, get it to grab in a wire fid and then enter the cover securely was actually tricky. But once you get it....a dbl braid splice is pretty simple. The satisfaction when the core tail pops out of the cover for its final bury....chef's kiss.
