Drumming things up

How do you drum up more tree work this time of year to try to keep busy? Remembering that I can't cause a natural disaster or storm.

Promote fall/winter work all year. Tell people that is the best time to prune trip trees, for the trees health (less insects and disease, less stressful to the tree). Over time you will develop clients that will call you for work during this time.

Mine your existing clients. Everytime we send out a email newsletter or a post card we get fairly good return. remind your clients that you exist and that they need you

Constant Contact! If you have a decent client list together, this is a way to drum up business when you need it. Works for me every time, sometimes works too much... A short informational news letter is all it takes, and you will get flooded with calls/emails from clients saying thanks for the email, and that they have been meaning to call you. Sometimes people just need a reminder that you're still there. I think I pay about $45 a month for the service, and it pays off HUGE

We did our large residential housing properties in the winter along with golf courses and other properties where usage during the summer was high. As stated above, it's a matter of business planning.

Actually they are. I have used them in the past in a different city. Its a good way to target your ideal demographic. That is if they are actually hung on the doors. Meaning either do it your self or have some one you know and trust do the foot work. I knew a clown in Colorado Springs who paid big money to have neighborhoods carpet bombed with fliers in the winter time. He would get a few calls but not many. Turns out he was using some tweaker advertising service that he found on CraigsList and he would give them BOXES of door hanger fliers to hang at a rate of something like 6 cents a flier. Well it turns out that only about 1/3 of the fliers were actually hung and the ones that were were hung in Trailer Parks and neighborhoods that were mostly rental homes. I am pretty selective of whos door I hang a flier on.

I worked for a large company in my metro area that did this and they said 30% of new callers were from door hangers alone it started by apologizing for the crews noise as an easy in and went on to describe our services. How many sales they made off it I obviously have no idea but they pushed it hard. At least 5 neighbors per job...

Yeah, I like the idea. I was thinking me and my guys would each just grab a few and walk around the neighborhood for 10 minutes after the job and hand them out. I really like the idea, if it is effective. I might try and design some.

Depending on specific codes in certain areas . You may need to acquire a solicitation license to do it legally. Door knocking with flyers that is . Not sure about just door hanging flyers . Not sure if what I'm talking about even gets enforced , if it is an issue , for any town anywhere. I'm going off hear say myself . Just worth looking into before code enforcer has your info after you hung one on a door or knocked and some up tight Ahole who likes screwing a working man around goes and tattle tails .Code enforcement may warn , may fine , worth looking into before you get jammed up. All I'm saying. I had the post office calle one time saying I needed to stop putting my card in people's mailbox. I wouldnt ever touch someone's mailbox cause I thought it was like a federal offense or some shit . So I was pretty ticked off when this happened . Told the person on the phone to call the police and dust the cards for prints cause I wanna know who's up to it . They never got back to me . As expected , protect and serve my ass. I have establishments and people I know whom let me place stack of cards by the door for people to take in their respected businesses and I think either someone thought they were doing me a favor or knew they were being an trouble maker . Started putting them in mailboxes . Either way I never found out . Or got one call from someone saying I found your card in my mailbox. On a good note. I did just score a sweet deal for 15$ a week for a micromedia newspaper add for ten weeks . Just a business card sized spot , but they are distributed lots of places around town and peoples houses . Hopefully that will drum something up!

I'm going to be doing a panel discussion with a Shade Tree Commission this month. It will be the third year. The audience is growing and its helped to build a relationship with the commission and each year I've generated at least 1 sizable job from an 1.5 hr evening. Putting together topic information is a good exercise in refreshing my knowledge and the opportunity to speak hones my presentation skills. This year we expect several other town environmental and shade tree commissions to attend. It's a slow process but it couples with direct marketing efforts like door hangers because the name can be associated with the presentation and advertising done by the commission prior to the seminar.
