DOT Bans Texting While Driving Commercial Vehicles

I just can't figure out why it's considered so dangerous to text back-and-forth with your friends while driving a train, plane, or bus. Twittering isn't "Texting" though, so we're cool with that for now and we can still send and receive pics though, right?

Hard enough to not get to enjoy a smoke while pumping gas. We gotta have "consent" before getting sex? They've even just made it illegal for a commercial pilot to nap while his autopilot flies the plane. The teacher can pack a .357 while teaching art classes, that's cool but why did they force pilots to take a breath-test if they smell a little like a distillery but insist they've not had anything to drink? Next they'll probably come after neurosurgeons - no liquor before operating. Jeez. What happened to our freedoms?

But...

...we can dial our phones
...fiddle with the radio/electric seats/makeup mirror
...input data to the GPS

This is going to be a hard one to enforce.

The intent does make sense though!

Makes sense. I'll text when I'm at a stop light or sign but never driving. Too much to be doing at one time. I don't even like answering my phone in the work truck.

On my way home from work I can be found yelling obscenities at people because I can see the phone's screen and them texting away. Just f'n drive.

I hear ya, man! They're takin' away our FREEDOM! American people LOVE freedom! ...Text 611 to your AT&T phone if you think you see a drunk driver. The call is free.

You're also free to hire a lawyer to sue your neighbor because he made a derogatory comment to you. What's that, you're Irish? he said Paddy Wagon? Call the cops! Call your lawyer! You're free to do so!

If someone can watch the road and text with 100% efficiency and attention, then go for it.

Of course I don't know one person who can.

But if someone can't figure out why texting should not happen while driving something on the roads, it may be time for them to hang up their keys for a while until they find other options.

I don't even dial on the road anymore. Just pull over to make calls and dial. If driving can't get my 100% visual attention, I don't want to be at the wheel.

Tried Bluetooth, but don't really care for the fit.

Voice recognition technology might hold many more answers for improved safety and increased communication while driving.

I agree 100% Mario. I was derailing the thread with that last post. It just pisses me off that it seems like so many people in this country bark about freedom, but want legal protection and the PC police to make all of the rough edges go away.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

If we can pilot drones to strafe villages in South Asia from an Airstream trailer near Las Vegas, we should be able to twitter our mistress while speeding through a school zone on our way to Seven Eleven. It's only fair.

But I agree with the suburban mommy thing - they're scary.

I agree - very hard to enforce, and won't really stop anyone from doing it. Just hold your phone down near your lap so no one can see it and drive off into oblivion.

Re: DOT Bans Texting While Driving Commercial Vehi

I think is would be rather easy to enforce. All text messages have a time stamp, it's on the bill. There is really no way to lie your way out of it. What the hell is so important to text while you drive? Best law ever. Now, if they can just work on a new law for the people who throw there cigarette butts out the window.

True, but they have to catch you first. I don't envision that many trucks getting pulled over, simply because its hard to see in the cab from lower down. In an accident situation, yes, the texting driver would be screwed.

I hate texting. If people want more than a 'yes' or 'no' response from me, they'll have to call me. Like others said, this ban should extend to everyone.
