Cypress Wreck

Gerald, that was a great video. I really enjoyed your commentary. I think if an arborist of your caliber can get caught out it's a reminder to the rest of us to expect the unexpected and always be on guard. Thank you.

It was a situation where the potential was there. Had the wood been sound in the lead tree it wouldn't have took off like it did, but still the other tree should have been able to hold it.

The reason its roots failed is because the ground was pure sand. Pulled out like a loose tooth. Was not any major roots on that tree. Mostly fibrous.

I have some other videos doing the same thing where it worked out great. But the cypress one was a baddy from the start.

Oh the rope I used was two wraps of 3/4 inch double braid. Which should have added up to 30,000.

I've seen this video by you before Jer, and the first time that I saw it I said WOW!

That's quite the video that can show how the best plans sometimes don't work out as we hoped. At least you knew that the tree had the potential for that to happen and had a good escape plan.

Thanks for showing that to us again in HQ!

Gerry-

Perhaps securing the leads of the triple together could have prevented the free for all situation? I know it's simplistic, but even the most solid looking trunks can separate during felling. That being said, It's possible that it could have made matters worse also.

You definitely get an A for guts on that job!!!

The thought of binding the triple together did cross my mind more than once, but I was hedging my bet that it was sound. After realizing the tree was rotten I had a gut feeling something I didn't plan on could happen.

Wide open drop zone and a sure way out. All I needed was quick feet.
