Crane removal of tree on house

Lift every piece of the tree off that you can, and then stand up the remainder of the tree; don’t try to lift the whole tree off the ground, just stand it up and lay it over again in a safe direction, preferably towards the crane.

Also rent a larger crane if needed. Takes a very large tree for a 70 or 80 ton crane not to be able to lift it. Remember, it doesn't have to pick up the whole weight of the tree as a good bit of it will be on the stump.

Taking as much weight off as possible is always a good idea unless its unstable.

We had a tree yesterday that wasn’t reachable by crane. We cut pockets into the log where accessible, and used smaller leads as props in the pockets to prevent settling while we cut pressure points. We used the skid steer to install the props, then lashed them together to prevent collapse. The rootball was intact, which prevented movement in other planes.

Croc, i see you're in NC. I just moved from there, how bad hit were yall?

Are you in the storm-work situation where all the cranes are booked up? Is a bigger crane even available?

Just did this Friday with a 40 something inch dbh red oak. It took 5-6 picks to get it clear of the house. Just look at it like minesweeper. Clear the easy stuff and the heady stuff reveals itself. I would think you’d be operating under an insurance claim so time really shouldn’t be the driving issue.

Yep we do that a lot on storm damaged trees, Works well
We have also successfully used 20 ton jacks and cribbing to lift trees where cranes can't reach. Make saddles so they don't slide off. Guy them out on each side to keep them from sliding sideways. Then you can usually take really small pieces onto a crash pad of cribbing so they don't punch through the roof.
