Crane job - no riding the ball

A lot of crane ops around here won't let us ride the ball, so I end up climbing the tree. This is what that looks like if anyone is interested. This is a job where two neighbors shared a crane - one to take out a tree and the other to lift a pool into the backyard.

Not able to watch the full vid. Internet speed here sucks. Hope you got some nice timber from that. Just got a nice 12'x20'' black walnut myself. Gonna have the Amish mill it for me.

That operator should get a lower paid rate /hr. Efficiency is key. Especially the rates they get paid.
I don't agree with the no riding the ball policy. I've read about that policy in one of the tree mags 20 yrs ago. I've also read articles against that policy stating that some trees are so dangerous, it takes 2 cranes for the removal. One for the tree and the other for climbers TIP.

Lives are at stake regardless. On the ground, tied into the tree, or on the ground. Sorry you have to deal with shit like that. Going back to the vid now that I have a bunch of it loaded.

Most of the crane work I’ve done in my career we had to climb the tree. In Oregon it is rare to find a crane company that will let you ride the ball regardless of the situation. Especially if you are dealing with any of the bigger crane companies. Oregon OSHA has its heads up its ass and it would take some hard lobbying in the state house to change those rules. Then you have to start in on the crane companies…. Easier to just buy your own crane. Luckily in our small town I’ve got a friend who has a few cranes and he loves doing tree work and doing it the smart way.

I haven't had the opportunity to work a Grove yet. @Muggs what was the distance from the turret to the picks?
Vids can be deceiving but, it looked like at least 150'. I would guess closer to 200.

Impressive. Wonder what the pool weighed.
Good question. These boom s can handle a shit ton of weight.....

We have some companies around here that wont let you ride either. I always enjoy the debate because they misunderstand the Standards. The goal is to get them to admit its company policy instead of saying OSGHA says you can't. The ones who let you are worth the tip to the operator. I'm not one of the companies who says no, however you have to pass the gear inspection and 100% follow all the rules. Gear fails and we don't pick. Don't follow the rules, you climb it. I won't be complicit in somebodies liability.

In BC the Worksafe BC website is pretty clear, workers are to be in a man basket not ride the ball. This works ok if the tree is stable, just climb out and the crane swaps basket for a sling, rappel down, cut.
If the tree is not stable it is a nuisance unless you can cut it with no rigging, just crane for manbasket.
There are operators that will let you do whatever, but WSBC regs are clear.
