RAINFOREST EXPEDITION on island of ISLA COLON, PANAMA
Joe Maher of TreeClimbing USA September 02, 2003
Expedition trip announcement!!!
In January of 2004 we will be hosting a tropical rain forest tree climbing expedition down in Central America; Panama, to be exact. This adventure will be based on Isla Colon, on the northwestern Caribbean coast of Panama, at a small beach village called Boca del Drago, which translated means mouth of the dragon.
If you have ever wanted to climb in a truly wild atmosphere here is your chance. Climbers will most likely encounter howler monkeys, whiteface monkeys, night monkeys, toucans, parrots, sloths, and a wide variety of other wildlife. This is a jungle and one may also encounter scorpions, spiders, and snakes.
We will be staying at The Institute for Tropical Ecology and Conservation http://itec-edu.org and will have a professor of tropical ecology, Dr. Peter Lahanas, on hand with us each day to introduce us to the tropical forest, answer questions, and climb with us into some of the trees. This is a great opportunity to climb and get educated about the trees in the tropics.
There will be opportunities to climb almost every day and the choice of climbs is virtually unlimited. There is no reason why every member of this expedition cannot make a first ascent in some previously unclimbed tree. For those who wish there will be opportunities to do treetop camping in the forest. There will be an opportunity for those wishing to do so to travel to a remote spot on the island by motorized dugout, navigate through a mangrove forest, then hike into a section of forest with several large trees which have never before been climbed.
All of the climbs are challenging, each tree will present its own unique necessity for problem solving, and none of these trees qualify as tame. Some climbing experience is necessary but there are trees that can be climbed by climbers of almost all levels.
This will be a 10-day expedition starting on January 10th, 2004, in Panama City and returning back to the USA on January 20th. Because this is the first gathering of its kind in this location we are only allowing 10 climbers to participate with us. We have already received a few verbal commitments and spaces are filling fast.
Those interested should contact us immediately. Contact should be made via this message forum or by communicating directly with

This does not cover your plane ticket to Panama and your subsequent flight to Isla Colon and Bocas del Toro. You are responsible for getting yourself to Bocas Del Toro, where we will be awaiting your arrival.
