In all my years of competing the most valuable thing I dropped was comparison. When I began to listen more than I spoke, strove only to be better than ”me“ the last time, then I began to reap the intangible rewards of friendship, community, and knowledge. One time in the Georgia comp in the belayed speed climb we had a guy that was smoking the climb when his snuff can came out of the leg pocket of his carharts. DQ!
Without the burden of comparison, I was free to drop unrealistic expectations and simply focus on having fun, laughing, and realizing there was much more to this tree climbing thing than climbing.
Instead of getting DQ’d for dropping these things I began to see my small measure of success. Over the years I lost more way more than I won, but I learned to never place my bet till the cards were in my hand.
I wouldn’t trade that even if I‘d been DQ’d
