Can\'t Buy The 1\" Hobbs Block

Well, I don’t know how many of you out there own the 1” capacity Hobbs Block, but if you do then you are lucky. You can’t buy them new anymore.

I just found out from WesSpur that the manufacturer is no longer producing the largest sized Hobbs Block. They just weren’t selling enough of them and the price was very high. How many arborist blocks out there have an 80,000 lb MBS and an 8,000 WLL? None that I can think of, besides the Hobbs.

WesSpur did say that they are trying to outsource the 1” block to some manufacturer and they hope to have it available later this year, but the specs are pretty tight. The 1” block will no longer be called the Hobbs Block anymore though

Re: Can\'t Buy The 1\" Hobbs Block

Thanks Robert, but Don was the first person that I checked with even before WesSpur and he hasn't had any for awhile now either.

Tom
It's not a bad thing. But its DEVALUED if it's pink. In fact ship it to me and pay the freight. I'll take it off your hands. But I don't want it if it has cat hair all over it.

Re: Can\'t Buy The 1\" Hobbs Block

Yeah, I just got off the phone with WesSpur again and they confirmed what I had been thinking.

There will be NO MORE Hobbs Blocks of any size for sale pretty soon. What they have in stock is only a few anyways (1/2", 5/8" and 3/4"), so if you want one, you better buy soon.

The manufacturer has stopped making ANY SIZE Hobbs. Don't know of anyone besides Don Blair and WesSpur that were selling them.

I personaaly own a 1/2", 5/8" and 3/4" and they are truly a workhorse of a block. The best blocks ever made, IMO.

Re: Can\'t Buy The 1\" Hobbs Block

I would say it is not important how often you need it but how important it is when you do need it!

I get that. I guess I was asking if you ever really need something with 8000lb WLL. If you do, what are you using it for?

Re: Can\'t Buy The 1\" Hobbs Block

I'm all about having the right tool for the job, but don't the "laws" of rigging call for the weakest link to be the rope? So if your rigging with somthing that has a 8K wll what would you be running thought it? and what would your use for a sling? Saying all that, I am all about going over kill.

Re: Can\'t Buy The 1\" Hobbs Block

Charly Potorff carries them too. I think he has a few left. Might pick one up, now that we know they aren't going to be available. Thanks for the heads up Chris.

Oh and I think the 1" hobbs is a west coast thing! j/k

Hey jf, just curious as to the size sling that you used with the 1" Hobbs. Was it a 1-1/8" or a 1-1/4" sling?

Re: Can\'t Buy The 1\" Hobbs Block

Chis , 1-1/4" sling is what we have , We were removing some large Euc's trees several yrs ago and I had a new green horn up in the tree , we had him set the block up high around 50ft , when he drop it and lucky no one was hit, that was the last time we used it

Now we go w/ smaller blocks , I am kind of looking at getting those DM blocks

Hattier had that big triangular thing in his shop when he was in Ohio and I always wanted to get my hands on it. He'd come WAY down on the price too but I passed and my man Drew Landers grabbed it...f^g. My CMI does the trick too but I mostly use it as a fairlead.
