Best line for ZigZag?

So after having used Tachyon for a few months with the ZigZag, I'm finding that it (Tachyon) doesn't hold up very well with repeated long, fast descents. Has anyone been using their ZZ for crane removals or with repeated descents, and if so, what lines are you using, and how have they held up? My first hank of Tachyon stayed round, but finally became so fuzzy and had so many loose strands appearing that I chose to retire it. The current hank flattened out quite a bit. I love the line, but can't justify another one if they'll only last a month. Any input would be appreciated.

Yep. The actual rope contact is where the real heat will be, just trying to think of reasons for the wear beyond the obvious.
Perhaps that momentary flash of heat is enough to fuzz the line

Hey Steve,
Thanks for the reply. I knew from your previous posts that you are a frequent user. I use mine every day. Most descents are slow due to obstacles, but there are the occasional more rapid descents which really don't generate that much heat because the zz is open all the way. Rarely more than 30 feet. Its the slow to stop that generates the heat. The first hank lasted quite a while, and had lots of use with a hitch before my replacement zz was delivered. The new hank, however, seems to have worn way faster than the first, which makes me hesitant to buy it again. I will try cougar this time around, and let you know how it holds up. YoYo, are you using a zz, and if so, what line do you favor? Any other input is welcomed.

Steve, how does the cougar self tail? I noticed that my second hank of Tachyon tailed much more efficiently than the first, which had gotten fatter and fuzzier. Tthe cougar is larger in diameter, so I'm curious how well it tails. When I'm re stuffing my rope back into the bag, the weight of the zz alone is enough to allow it to self tail with Tachyon.

Probably the same as you describe. Usually about 10' off the ground I don't need to tend any slack. The higher the better it tails. Despite gaffing my rope or the random careless groundie with a chainsaw my cougar last longer than 12 months.

I have a lot of different lines but I seem to be gravitating always too fly or dragonfly.
it is light and runs smooth with the zigzag my Roperunner but I am mostly a rec/travel climber and may see things differently than somebody that is climbing and working with the line every day. I am also still adjusting to the fact that I'd like the zigzag so much. It has integrated well and actually changed some of the ways that I climb and move about the canopy.

I've been climbing with the ZZ for a few months now and love it. I've used two different lines and at the moment I'm climbing on blue moon. I was using it on vortex and it acted much more like a hitch I think due to the fatter diameter line. It didn't self tend very well unless there was a lot of line below it and it was smooth to tend, but not silky smooth. The blue moon has been a totally different story self tends with very little line below and super smooth tending. Can't comment on longevity as I've only had this hank of rope for about a month and I don't climb on it every day.

@yoyoman. I was sort of leaning toward dragonfly due to the smaller diameter, in fact it was in my shopping cart at Treestuff before I started this thread. I'm going to give that and the cougar a try. I will keep you posted. Thanks again.

i do mostly crane removals and have used only Imori on it so far and it handles rapid descents all day long and self tends well with it
