As many in the Philadelphia area know Beech trees are having a tough time. Throughout the day speakers will discuss insects, disease and cultural aspects of what makes a beech tree thrive. There are currently 10 PA pesticide credits available, and there will be ISA CEU's available (unsure how many yet). There is a great list of speakers. The days events are as follows;

Learn about the latest tree management strategies including research on Phytophthora at Longwood Gardens Beech Tree Summit.

Leading experts will discuss pest issues along with management strategies that will help provide better growing conditions for beech trees.

8:30am-9:00am Registration, coffee, etc.
9:15-9:30am Welcome (Shawn Kister - Grounds Leader, Longwood Gardens)
9:30: 10:30am Dr. Chuan Hong (Virginia Tech) - Phytophthora in the environment/overview
10:30-11:30am Dr. George Hudler (Cornell University) - Phytophthora and beeches: susceptibility, treatment, etc.
11:45-12:45pm Lunch provided
12:45-1:45pm Dr. Brian Kunkel (University of Delaware) -- Insect pests of beech - ambrosia beetle and two-lined chestnut borer
1:45-2:45pm Dr. John Ball (South Dakota State University) - Abiotic stresses on trees
2:45-3:30pm Mike Leventry - (IPM Specialist, Longwood Gardens) and Scott Wade - (Longwood Arborist) - Beech management at Longwood Gardens
3:30-3:45pm Closing remarks

Beech trees are a real favorite. We have two Germans visiting over the previous two weeks and this would be their last full day with us, but maybe I can get away for this. Great time to see Longwood Gardens exploding into Spring glory...
