I was taught using a buck strap and never strayed away. I run across climbers that smile at it Time to up grade. What's the best for the price. Wire core has been on my mind.. to many choices.

Are you talking about the flat belt/buckle setup?

Are you considering a rope/hitch setup for the upgrade?

It helps to narrow the options before making suggestions.

There are friction hitch setups that are smoooooth, close at hand and streamlined.

If you're interested...I'll drop some pictures in.

Getting rid of my lineman's strap was the first step to becoming a tree climber. Over the years I've tried a lot of setups...one easier than the last.

im still climbing on a tautline hitch as well. It was how i was taught but i have noticed its outdated . here i am at 26 climbing like a cave man compaired to all these new devices most people are using . Never even dreamed of SRT

As for the lanyard/buck strap:

Try new things, but low and slow. There is cost involved in switching to new systems, but you will be amazed at the difference. A lanyard that can be adjusted with one hand is a beautiful thing. Check out the many options on treestuff.com. They have great prices and their offerings will give you an idea of the options that are available to you. I switched over to a RockGrab first and then moved onto something similar to a Teufelberger CE Lanyard. I have a 20' lanyard that I feed into a small bag to manage the slack. It is awesome and such an incredible improvement to what I started with.

As far as the climbing system:
I would suggest trying some based off the Hitch Climber pulley

Good luck! Always keep learning new techniques... SRT is a step away, but I would get used to the Hitch climber on a doubled rope before switching to a static system.

webster for real short $ you can make a new lanyard set up. if your set on coming up with something instead of using the buckstrap, you could use some components from that, and you probably have the rest of what you would need kicking around.
9ft+ of rope (whatever you preference, i use probably 12'), some hitch cord, a boatsnap/micopulley/ anything to tend the hitch, a snap, and a carabiner.
the termination knot at the end is free. if you have a sherrill catalogue you can find an example to build one off of.
think you will love the change, good luck
