Arbpro LD2 winch - rigging

Hey.
Just bought my first rigging winch - Arbpro LD2.
It looks like an excellent piece of equipment.

Anyway, I am looking for some tutorial videos and/or manuals regarding rigging (winch) work. Have watched the Greg good videos (grcs). They are great, but I really would like to see some more videos or similar, that explains how to work with the winch. I am thinking about pulley setups, cutting techniques and so on.

Thanks :-)

Yep. It's the same harken winch. A different mount plus a rope grab for extra safety. To me it looks like an updated version of the grcs.
Have you got some pictures or videos of the grcs in function? :-)

Peter--Are you sure the arbpro is the same winch as the GRCS? I'm pretty sure that this is not the case. I believe Harken will only license use of the bigger models to Good Rigging LLC (manufacturer of the GRCS). I know the Arbpro 1 had a Harken 32 (or something like that)--a small winch, does the Arbro 2 have a Harken 46 or larger (like the GRCS)?

Wondering why the abandonment of a top fair lead (as in the GRCS) for a threaded cleat, as in the Arbpro 2. This has always struck me as a design flaw built upon good intentions. Trying to create a safety mechanism, have they not created a problem for rope management? Every time you pull out the rope, do you not have to pull the rope all the way through the cleat?

The arbpro ld2 has Got a harken 44, 2sct.
I am waiting for a rope that fits before I can tell you if it's good or bad working with the rope grab :-) my normal 16mm (5/8) dynasorb/polydyne rope is a tiny bit too thick to feed through the rope grab, so I had to order a 14 mm (9/16)
samson stable braid.
Ward: you are absolutely right. It seems like it could be quite time consuming, but I'll get back to you as soon as I have tried it out with my new rope :-) it should be on its way from sherrill. It seems like a good safety feature.

Anyway - I assume you have got some experience with the grcs? How large branches do you raise up to vertical and then rig it down "standing". Any tricks? And do you often take the end out first and then raise the rest up and rig it down vertically? Do you secure the base or does the climber always trust the hinge when you raise up large branches? It seems like one could have quite a dangerous situation, if the hinge for some reason should snap...

Sorry for the many questions :-) I just really miss some experience I can learn from, using a rigging winch.

Take care!

The original GRCS has a Harken 46. There was a rare batch of 48's which went through before the release of the new, specifically designed by Harken for arborist application winch, which is standard. My Harken 46 can lift over 1k....at the higher end of the scale I've had rope slipping problems. With the new winch, the bollard is taller and can admit of more wraps, therefore more holding power.

I will tell you to trust the mechanical advantage. Make sure your rigging point is as high as possible above the point where you are tying it off. Don't expect the impossible: things will snap and break free if poorly thought through. Be sensible about balance points and distances. Face towards the rigging point block. Crank away. Trust in yourself.
