#ThrowbackThursday is a personal view of Anthony Longhurst climbing 38 metres up the rigging of the replica HMB Endeavour in 2010 while crossing the Bass Strait on the way back from Tasmania.

Do they free climb or have some sort of fall arrest gear? Modern sort of issue.

Ha! I think of R.H. Dana's classic Two Years Before the Mast,
when the sailors --possibly at *inconvenient* hours-- are sent
up the mast to take in sails rounding the Horn, because the wind is yet rising,
and they don't use their wool gloves as those slip too much on the iced
ropes! --banging hands to try to make the blood flow, out on a yard,
pulling in sail. .:. Not a lotta OSHA-like safe-practices constraints, there.

Or, for that matter, the wonderful photo book by Eric Newby
--viz., Learning the Ropes-- with him up and out of a yard to take
photos of the Moshulu's rising & falling, semi-submerged, in Force 11
conditions (though, his choosing, in this). (Oddly, this book emerged
only decades later than his 1956 book on The Last Grain Race.)

Though, he reports being sent "op the mast!" as a new
recruit, still in street shoes, and ... 185' to top (admitting to
pretending not to hear the shouted command to go up
higher to it upon top).

Excellent reference, I really enjoyed this book (Dana, 2 yrs before the mast)
