looking at another truck to add the fleet, guy is asking 44k 95k miles, truck is very clean, air brakes 6 speed eaton, new tires, no leaks clutch is nice and a lot of adjustment left. seem like a good price? i see same versions of this truck in a 01 form for 30k still. so for 10g more a newer truck not bad i feel? what are your thoughts?

I think if you have 45k to spend I'd find a roll off truck like you'd been wanting. How much is that setup new from southco if you send them a cab and chassis? I'd think you could get a little more or newer truck for that kinda money but I also could be wrong.

IMHO, the price seems about right. But like TC said, you can also buy a similar hook truck for the same $, then you can have chip box, wood dumpster, spray rig, etc.

My brother has a good looking F750 with a C7 cat, air brakes, 6 speed manual, 33k gross, around 110k miles and I believe a 16' flatbed but may be shorter. I think it's a 04 or a 05, I know he'd sell it for $12,000. If I remember right you could get a new southco chip box and L boxes for under $20k or send it out for a hook lift. Might not be a bad route to go and save ya a little cash.

tc, i run currently run two chevy 4500's as pictured, but between the injector problems and price of chevy parts i don't believe there in the picture for a more profitable business. between looking at new jobs, walking properties of old ones, maintaining my equipment, servicing 2 other tree companies equipment on top of my town job I'm spread very thin. I've contemplated about going to the f750's, my plan is to get a big chip truck like that one and then sell my other two trucks in a year and get a hook lift. i like trucks to be matching etc. you always have to be looking towards to future and the bigger chip truck for a k boom and the hook lift to drop tubs off i think is the way to go now. one main reason why I'm looking at this chip truck first is i haven't seen a really clean not beat up one, lets face it tree guys are hard on the equipment.

i don't offer plant health care as of right now jeff, if a customer asks for it i have a friend that dose a couple hear and there for me and him self on the hush. i need to have everything else in order and not so hectic before i applie time to that, but i would set up a flat bed for the hook lift with tanks and reels if i do.

I know tree trucks usually get abused. Thats why I was saying you might want to consider finding a clean box truck or flatbed and send it down to get a new chip box installed. If you have guys with a CDL the 33k gross trucks do hold up much better. I never minded much about having the same looking trucks, but it is nice for keeping spare parts, filters, ect on the shelf. Just the same colors and graffics works for me, even tho I still have one thats a differnet color. I don't have the room to park or guys with a cdl or I'd go with bigger trucks. Around here any single axel trucks over 26K gross usually sell for less used than trucks that are under 26K.

tc im not worried about the cdl part. I'm interested in the longevity of the trucks. under 26gvw trucks just are not heavy duty enough. i believe getting this chip truck and a hook lift with a couple dumpsters and a flat bed for possible phc, is the route i need. under 26k trucks do sell for a lot around me, i feel as if everyone is looking to retire when they sell there 1 ton dump. i rent 2 spots for wood/trucks so i got plenty of room for 20 trucks.

i can see where your coming from but i really want a normal chip truck as well with tool boxes etc. the hook lift would just be used to drop tubs at jobs for wood pick up and transporting the skid steer not so much as a chip truck.

Dont rush into anything. I made a few mistake this year with thinking that I needed certain pieces of equipment that I really didn't need. I would take your time and really sit down with your crew and decide where your going. This is the most important thing. Where are you headed. Always start with the end in mind. Then work backwards to where you re right now. It can be hard, but can save you some headache of purchasing the wrong equipment. Let's face it, we can almost always convince ourselves that a certain piece of equipment will work for our operations. But will it really be good a year from now, or 5 years. Just my 2 cents.

I myself was eyeing hooklift trucks for my next step. I really want a cdl one but finding cdl drivers that are willing to labor is tough.
Tc262, you're saying it's not worth it to have just one hooklift? I find that hard to believe but I do see the advantage of multiple ones.
Anyone thought of buying a cdl hooklift and getting it de-rated?

No its absolutly worth it to have one, but you open up a ton of possiblites if you have more than one. Any truck could grab any body and be whatever you needed it to be. If one truck was down for maintaince or repairs your not at a standstill. Its what I'd like to work up to someday, but thats a long ways off. A guy around here runs nothing but peterbuilt rolloff trucks and loves them.

I'm not to sure on the legality of de-rating a truck. Lots of guys think if they register it under and keep it under weight it would be ok but its not, at least not here! Our laws say registered weight, actual weight or gross vehicle weight rating which ever is greatest. As far as I know you can't leagally change the gvwr unless your the manufacturer. For the most part you might be able to get away with it but what concerns me is if there is ever an accident. Lawers would tear you apart in court and you'd open yourself up to the possiblity of a huge lawsuite.

i think with this 30yrd chip truck, it will be perfect match for a 1890xp and set my self up for multiply k boom take downs. and having the hook lift wit tubs to generate money from that as well. I'm phasing out my chevy duramax's with internationals. I'm not a fan of people derating trucks, the more weight it can carry the better. its not hard to get a cdl so i don't know why anyone wouldn't want to get it. you can take a driving class and spend 1500 for a class a and be done for life.

thanks royce, i agree with that if we may need a piece on one job we can always convince ourselves its the best thing to buy but thats not always true. how is the log trailer working? how is your new chip truck with the tail gate going?

Log trailer is great. But, now we need a log truck. Landed a big contract where all the wood needs to be off the property the day it's cut. Now the log trailer will have to take three or four trips a day. That ties up the larger capacity chip truck.

The lift gate is the worst configuration I could possibly think of. It's a real pain to dump when the truck is fully loaded. I am in the process of removing the lift gate. Know anyone who wants one? Real cheap. Like 500 dollars cheap!!
