    Advice for kids swing

Wow. These are awesome. The reason I asked is that I'm worried that movement caused by securing the swing to a webbing sling would likely erode the bark over time. Again, these trees aren't valuable to me but anything that affects the health of the tree will also affect the safety of the...

    Advice for kids swing

Hi All, I want to put a swing up for the kids. I have a little 7 foot swingset in the back yard that isn't cutting it as they grow. I like to sling a rope over a 25 foot limb and toss them around in their harness, but I'd also just like a higher plane jane swingset for them to play on. I...

Do you ever bookmark your climbs?

Funny you mention that! I found some 3/16 rope on clearance for $0.10 / meter yesterday and bought it with this application in mind!

If you are buying mason's line, make sure you get braided line instead of twisted. The twisted stuff tangles like crazy whereas the braided pays out nicely. They are usually the same price.

    First Traverse

My home made unit is pretty light. When you tie it on, tie your loop big so that it hangs down well below the throwline. This will give you all the dangle you should need to reach the line. It won't go over the branch unless you feed it too much slack. I might still add some weight to mine...

    First Traverse

Cool stuff. Those hitch climber pulleys are very high on my "I want one" list. Funny you mention the double-eye hitch cords. I made some up on the weekend and I've been practicing my distel hitch and VT on the couch. Need to get them burned into the brain before attempting climbing on them...

    First Traverse

Cool demonstration of how the grapnel works. The one he uses is the one I copied (from pictures). He mentions that it is nice to have a place to stand when you get to your destination. I'd add that you'll also want a destination clear of small twigs and branches. Larger sticks are easier to...

    First Traverse

I very much appreciate the comments, folks. The traverse was set up in one continuous loop, but in operation it could be more like two DdRT setups if you tied in with each end of the rope and used the slack in the middle as your running ends. As for safety precautions, I tried the setup once...

Home-Made Gear: Thow Bag, Grapnel, Friction Saver & Harness Mods

Moss! That is a very generous offer, thank-you! Your concern for my comfort is commendable. I have a New Tribe Tengu ordered for my wife and kids, so I can get a good appreciation of the differences from that. I may upgrade in the future, especially if I decide I want to hunt from a harness...

Home-Made Gear: Thow Bag, Grapnel, Friction Saver & Harness Mods

I'm a rec climber climbing on a budget, so I like to save money where I can. Throw Bags: These are easy if you know how to sew and have some lead kicking around. Just trace a bow-tie shape onto some fabric (or trace an existing bag and add 1/2" and mirror it at the bottom), and then at the...

    First Traverse

Wow, thanks for the positive comments, folks. Moss has a 3-part redwood video on his vimeo channel that includes a traverse. This video is a big part of why I decided to start climbing. A few days ago, I had some difficulty accessing a particular tree I wanted to get in, and I thought of his...

    First Traverse

Hi folks, new rec climber/member here. I tried my hand at my first traverse the other day. It was a little clunky but successful. I've attached a crude picture to illustrate. I started by climbing Tree A. I tied in and tossed a throw bag over to Tree B, retrieving my throw line with a home...
