Looking for ideas to make my own tree squeeze on the cheap...show me your adjustable, friction saver. I have a pinto, spare rings - just not sure what rope, or cord to use. At this time, I can only splice 3 strand lol1552149153277.webp

I've seen some variations here and there...just curious to see what you use and if you have any ideas for me to keep it on the cheap. Thank you.

Learning to splice 12 strand is easy peasy, and that’s what I use. 3/8” tenex tec through an 8mm DMM thimble with maxim tech cord through the 6mm thimble, and some chafe sleeve. I can have a 6’ saver for $15 of cordage. The thimbles are $20 each, but won’t wear out, and won’t snag as easily as rings. I like to replace my cordage annually.

Here is my current fs. I’m about to replace the cordage (just ordered it, thanks for starting the thread). It’s just under 5’ and is a little short for my everyday needs. The chafe sleeve should also be 6” longer.

The biner is for clipping to my saddle, a separate retrieval line, or to add bend radius (ish) when choked on a spar.

To get the stiffness of the treesqueeze, I would add one or two of yoyoman’s velcro/leather sleeves. They would help keep the fs open while ascending like the treesqueeze.

@Crimsonking the double fisherman prussic thimble is wicked, I like that. I'm sold on the thimbles and learning how to splice 12 strand lol thanks crimson. What do you do for retrieval if needed: an overhand knot or a retrieval cone thinger?

There's nothing wrong with using 3 strand for a friction saver too. I think the question I have for you is, what characteristics or features are you looking for from your friction saver?

Figure out how long you want it to be, and order three more feet for splicing the eye and backsplice on the other end.

As for the maxim, I’m leaning more toward buying the teufelberger lanyard thimble prusik for the beefier cordage and easier adjustment.

If you do buy the maxim, go ahead and buy 10’ or so. You’ll find other uses, and should make a habit of replacing it every 6 months or annually, depending on how frequently you use your friction saver. That’s my m.o. to account for strength degradation of the technora core of maxim due to flex fatigue.

Most used in canopy... can be installed/retrieved from the ground, SRT or DdRT... chainsaw protection (dyneema strands chopped to 6" ~ 8" length and tacked to first layer of chafe sleeve with contact adhesive before second layer of chafe sleeve is added)... core is a 14,000 lb. sling...
Nice looking piece of gear, lots of love went into that FS. You can't remote set the choked config, tho, right? Only basket with hydra + ring?

Looking for 2nd tie in point for spar work, I like the tree squeeze idea, but does it always have to have a MRS hitch involved?

...remote set the choked config...

You can remote install it in choked configuration for both SRT and DdRT... slightly more work than a simple ring-and-ring FS for DdRT, about the same for SRT. I've done it so much, I don't even have to think about it, anymore.

...2nd tie in point for spar work...

You can choke an SRT line to the stem... I leave one of these attached to the ropes I use for SRT, because I only use canopy anchors. I do have a 75' rope that I sometimes choke to a spar, but I use a 3/8" TenexTEC ultrasling with a ring spliced onto the end with that one. I attach the rope to the anchor with a steel oval 'biner.

This one is a hank of KM3 Max attached by way of a Rock Exotica shackle swivel. For SRT, the rope can be left attached to the anchor.

I hardly climb DdRT and definitely not on a removal. So no sqeezing. I have loads of spliced friction savers. But nothing beats a fimblclimb for me. Best SRT canopy anchor. I know it is a derail. This is one well built fella. 95 dollars of pure joy. 2019-08-20 08.23.05.webp
