Kids twist mod

My kid stared off with a kids rock climbing harness, I wanted him to have d rings. I took a 5/16 ths nylon loop runner and two SMC rappel rings girthed to it with a few stitches to make sure it wouldn't shake loose. I'll see if I can dig up some photos tomorrow.

Are you planning on using these soft Dee's for primary life support while transferring, or just positioning?

That's really a cool idea, and it looks bomber, but I'm really more curious about that thumb tattoo.

Also, just thought I'd throw it out there because I have thought about this some, but while everything may be bomber that you make, please remember that when you're making things for people who aren't pros you have to remember that they don't have the habits of checking everything every time or really understand the forces at play. I like the rings better just because you can't clip into the ring wrong. Y'all make sure everyone is safe and have fun.

Equally interested in recommendations. I have a 10 year old nephew who enjoys free climbing low in trees and one day hope to have my daughter interested climbing.

Red one in first post is the new tribe twist. Which I would recommend for the six year old.

They make the kids basic with side d's as well which I would recommend for the ten year old.

Both are great harnesses. My boy just graduated to the basic and he is really stoked on it.

I got 17 stitches in that thumb.. The ER doc who sewed me up was stoked that he could like up the tissue by using the tattoo... Truth to be told, my kid isn't allowed to rope climb unless I'm in the tree with him.

At no point will my six year old be unsupervised climbing trees. I believe your concern is slightly reactionary.

Well of course your six year old won't be unsupervised.
It was just some of my thoughts in general when modifying gear for non-climbers.
I may have thrown it out in a little bit of a reactionary manner, but it came up recently and I felt like sharing.
My wife recently got her first harness and I realized when I was thinking about adding a caritool that it should be somewhere distinctly different from her side D because of the lack of habits I mentioned above.

Hey I know this is really really late in the game, but I wanted to ask a few questions.

1) it's been a while, have these harnesses been climbed on much? Any takeaways after that time?

2) I made a similar mod when climbing in a rock harness, but my biggest complaint was the rings shifting, so I wanted to add a note for anyone trying this mod to keep in mind that you need to always clip in to both at the same time unless you've made accommodations for that.

Resurrecting an old thread...

I had asked about a Rec harness for a friend in this thread

Settled on the Singing Rock Timber 3D.

Now I need a harness for my boys as they have grown out of the kid harness I've gotten them. The Timber 3D is just a tad big for them right now...

Revisiting the Twist modded with side rings. Any reason not to splice those in like folks are doing with the Valiant (Matt Cornell's latest harness). Lots of examples here

More like what @evo posted above than the OP... Obviously, that is different than the Valiant in that I would be ending on the side rings instead of continuing on to the bridge.

Using two (or 3 - should I put one in the back?) of these: https://www.treestuff.com/isc-fully-marked-aluminum-ring/
and some 16 strand

Any safety concern?

Would that dig into the back and sides to much since the waist belt on the Twist isn't designed for that?

We wound up getting the new tribe kids saddle. It has sewn in soft dees, but I think it was the last year they made them with dees.
With kids you’d have a hard time getting the bury right with 16 strand even with a crossover. I’d consider a endless loop of 3/8th tenex, it would spread the load over a greater surface.
Also for extra security figure out a way to run it though the existing suspension.

You thinking then just girth hitch the rings then? I was thinking of feeding the rope through the "belt loops" on the Twist. I don't have the harness, so can't play around with it to figure that out yet, but open to suggestions!

Does the belt come all the way out? If so, I could feed that through the rings. Probably should use regular Ds for that so they don't bunch it up like a ring would. So if I'm gonna do that...dumb question, where can I get D rings??? Not seeing them at the "usual" suspects; gap, treestuff, sherrill, shelter, wesspur, bartlett... I'd still use the rope to let them pull against each other better.
