Hitch independent ZK-2 tether

I like the dog snap too.

Here's mine:

Excellent Adam, I like the home shop milling work ;-) Ok, so mine is very similar except using Ocean Vectran and my hand-milled washers are integrated into the tether eyes and the slic pin slides back and forth but is captive so no mini tethers. I'm still building it! Will post photos today.

The dog snap idea is a good one, simple and no small parts for gloved hands to worry about.

Nice piece of engineering Adam with the tear drop leashed washers.

Nice work again moss, have you thought about using poly urethane for the grommets or thimbles in the eye's, works well, wear not an issue, easy on alloy and steel alike and is easy to tool.

Thanks, guys. I'm happy with it until I see what moss has done..

There is one drawback to mine and I've only experienced it once. When I was first using it I didn't pay attention to the way the slic pin was oriented. It was clocked about 90 deg CCW from the last picture.

Under load the legs of the hitch squeeze the washers and in that particular instance actually squeezed the slic pin enough to have it slightly inside that washer. The chances of it actually coming out were slim to none, but worth mentioning. The other hitch leg retains both washer and pin. I make sure to clock it like in the pic before I go up.

I would use these slic pins for everything if they sold them individually!

I too am waiting with anticipation to see his fantastic work. You guys have come up with a fantastic solution so while waiting I put together a quick $1.99 version purchased from Ace Hardware.

I tell ya, the abundance of creativity related to the ZK-2 tether is out of this world!

Great catch Adam on the hitch eye hitting the slic pin release. I've been trying to decide whether or not to fix the rotational orientation of the slic pin release (a little more difficult than not to do it)and now I know the answer.

Adam, that looks awesome. I can't wait to fly it.

Those slick pins are just that; SLICK!

I'd like to see moss' new creation, too.

Up for another climb?

You guys came up with a great idea!
I just took the easy and inexpensive route but it seems to work perfect. Climbed up and down in this white oak about 6 times today switching back and forth SRT DdRT, worked like a charm!

I do feel a little guilty, like I cheated, buying something this inexpensive and installed it with so little effort but seems to work so well.

Thanks

Climbed today with your ideas and it worked perfect, thanks.

Dude, we're doing open source inventing, what Mr. Bingham has been doing all along since his earliest SRT innovations. We're continuing a fine tradition for the rope wrench. Surveyor has been a big part of this too, and others (Oceans, Adam, Tony K., you, etc.). It's a great story. Speaking of which, gotta get down to the basement and finish shaping a key part for my tether.

Here's how it came out, slic pin doesn't rotate so the hitch cord can't contact the pin release

Sewn eyes in Ocean Vectran 6mm, pin, a couple stainless washers (ended up using only one stainless washer) and a home made washer that catches the pin.

Your a clever man Mr Moss. I can't see it in the pic but I assume that the captured washer the catches the slic pin is keyed a certain shape as is the pin to stop the rotation?

Whilst the RW isn't rated for Life Support that tether could be.

Whats next (or left for that matter)?

Edit: Added

Do you not heat shrink the legs down to the eye to allow for the multiple mounting points on the HC ?

It's more simple than that, the slic pin head is glued into the eye so it won't rotate. The eccentric shaped washer is glued onto the other eye (and pinned down by the shrink tubing), it catches the pin lock. The tether legs are long so the fixed pin can be opened out to install on or off the HC. Like so:

I'd rather not have the longer legs and simply slide a non-rotating captive pin back and forth to install. Have an idea how to do that with some additional slic pin and custom washer modifications. Basically a simple key interlock so the release is always oriented away from potential contact with the hitch cord.

I have been known to enjoy myself some fine recreational climbing.

It might be a couple weeks before I get some free time on the weekend but I'm definitely down!

I like this! I feel the same way. It ain't stealing if it's put out there for free. It's a take it and make it better mentality.

For example, Moss, I'm totally busting some glue out tonight.

Very nice work.

Well shoot, this long legged slic pin tether actually worked out well. As Tony knew before I did, it can attach to either the top or middle opening on the HC. You can adjust the length of the tether a little say to fit a longer hitch by moving it it to one or the other attachment point. Since you lose a place to hook your HUT (holder upper thingy) when the tether is on the middle HC attachment point I added a loop to the tether to hook your advancer into.
