Tree Labels & an ID

Realizing tree ID is not my forte, I thought I could start improving by identifying all the trees in my wooded backyard. Then I thought it'd be neat to have little ID plaques for at least one of each species, like you sometimes see on nature trails; fits with my woodland garden theme. I have one species I've not been able to positively ID. I have several contenders, but struggling to pick the right one. TIA for any help you can offer. Pics show leaves, lower trunk and where the bark changes character about 8 ft up the trunk. I've not noticed any flowering. It's a small (<25') understory tree.

Thanks everyone! Are the small ones I have too shaded to produce flowers and fruit? They're not young trees, just kind of puny.
