This Tree- Hopefully Good Hardwood For Smoking Meats?

Howdy folks. I recently cut down a tree for a neighbor and I'd like to know what species it is. I hope it's good for cooking with!

This is in eastern North Carolina. My best guess is hickory or beech, but I don't know much.

The leaves are just a little wilted for the picture with them in my hand, the tree had been dead for 24 hours before that picture.
