Hi! I’m new to arboriculture, but have been working as a sawyer / feller / forester etc in fire for 8 years. I live in southern Arizona which is not exactly a hotbed of tree work, and I’ve been reaching out to local arborists and tree companies but can’t even get a call back for very underpaid ground positions, and when I go to pick up or drop off applications and these places, I’ve never seen one woman working in the field. There’s no college that offers arboriculture programs, and I travel a lot for work anyways, and I’m just curious if there’s anybody who I could talk to who has ideas. I would definitely go out of state for some weeks or months of getting to work and learn in a chill and safer environment. I would love to learn more about rigging and ground support and move towards improving my climbing skills. I have my own climbing gear . I’m a hard worker just very sick of condescending or cruel or violent men from fire and forestry and would love to learn from women and or queer people!

Yes to Ryan and Kathy.

I might know a person.

Consider expanding on your skill set and experience in this post. Add in specific learning goals, along with how you are working toward them.




Rec climbing, and rec climbing with weights to simulate work conditions, is good training.

Throw line skills are so important in working smarter/ safer not harder.

Rope-walking skills practically are a must in there parts for pruning/ maintaining and removal, alike.

Practice setting rigging up and breaking it down. Familiarity brings efficiency.

Rock climbing/ gym climbing is great for improving climbing skills... balance-y/ technical footwork on small holds, not power climbing.

I just meant that he doesn't strike me as chauvinistic or toxic in the way many guys are in this industry. Seems like a really positive person, and since he needs help for only a few months, with the possibility of more if it suits both parties, it seems like an ideal situation, since it sounds like she has more experience with a chainsaw than I do.

A rope access guy I know told me a long time ago that lots of industries will teach you how to climb if you're highly qualified for whatever it is that they want you to do once you're up there. Like, if you're a bad ass welder, they'll teach you the rope access or pay for your training, but if you're just a climber, you're not likely to find a company that will pay for you to get good at welding.

And for whatever it's worth, I identify as androgynous, though I present as male because of cultural conditioning.

Hey! Excited you’re getting into this, not excited you are hitting that wall with the local tree crews. There’s a lot of fantastic female arborists on instagram that I follow with really great content you may want to check out. Search for woman arborists, female arborists, etc. I’ll DM you a few accounts that I really learn a lot from and are usually pretty hilarious too. Someone in particular who is in S Cali who just cracks me up. I won’t post the accounts here bc there are some kind of creepy dudes who lurk on here sometimes.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with lots of different women over the years, they have been some of the most inspiring and knowledgeable people I have learned from. There really isn't a good reason that there aren’t more in the industry. Wish you luck in bringing your skill set to tree care! You’ll be an asset to anyone I’m sure.

OP said they were ‘very sick of condescending or cruel or violent men.’ Sounds pretty reasonable. This is a persistent issue in our industry. Just yesterday August Hunicke made a post online responding about how there’s no women on his crew, ‘They were making sandwiches.’ Wtf
