Lanyard snap attachment

When you have cramping/arthritis issues with your hands, a snap comes in handy. I would rather not use a carabiner. It’s time for a new lanyard and I have a couple nice snaps from retired lanyards. Are my options buy a new lanyard with installed snap or splice one on? IDK how to splice so either it’s time to learn or have a buddy do it. I have seen a few guys just double fishermen one on but, my luck it will get stuck in a crotch. I have some short lengths of 11.7 Samson 24 strand. How about some suggestions. Craig

Splicing is probably easier than you think it is, and there is a cool feeling I get knowing that I spliced that eye. Take comfort in the fact that as long as it meets certain minimum standards, it should hold more load than any knot you'd wanna use there.

These are nice, I have one, openable. Add to any spliced hank you have. Most trimming lanyards for me come from old climb lines that got nicked.

Yep, that's exactly how I've made a number of my softcore flip-lines as well.

Or just take some three-strand and backsplice onto an existing snap. Very easy. 3 strand makes a great lanyard.

Does that pulley serve any purpose when used on a lanyard?

I prefer a swivel on my lanyard snap...but like that opening style.

It works and is easy to splice...but doesn't work with an ART positioner.

But 16 strand does...and that's not hard to splice. But OP said something about cramping/arthritis - that would make the final bury really hard, so find some hydraulics (I use the dump trailer - tie off and use the lift to pull it in)

The little yellow thing isn't a pulley, it is the part that comes out when you remove the retainer bolt, so that you can install that snap on a closed eye rope. You don't have to splice it in, you can install it on any rope with an eye.

Cool... thanks for clarifying!

16strand is a very simple splice to learn. Not the easiest per se but one that really gets your head wrapped around it.
More than happy to walk you through some tricks I’ve picked up.
There is nothing wrong with just buying whatever flipline you want (or prespliced rope) and using a Mallon rapide or rated screw link as a connection. Just put a dab of lock tight and snug up to spec.

I usually do two things to make it easier.
First I measure back about 12” and make a heavy mark. I pretend this is the end of the rope giving me a little extra tail to work with.
I set the eye first by only entering the throat and then exiting about 6-8”
This gives enough tail to tie off and yank or even put a carabiner in the eye and tie off the tail with all the slack out. Even if this is tying off between two trees or trucks. Just bouncing or even stepping on the line will get the eye to suck in.
It gets a little tricky as you now have to bury the tail back through exact same spot to exited but it’s totally doable.
I prefer a wire fid made from a folded piece of music wire with a t handle made from a old hammer handle or whatever I have laying around

Y’all have me interested in splicing. I have spliced 3 strand. I also have the Petzl Eashook on one lanyard. I think I’ll get my buddy to give me a lesson.

Knots can also be untied if the line needs to come back through a tight union. I work with a guy who prefers them for that reason, and for the record, I have gotten a spliced eye stuck in an especially tight union.
