Arborsoftworx posted this story on their Facebook page on how some in the industry are concerned about the influx of "weekend cowboys" that think tree work is a great way to pick up some fast cash. Note that this story is from August 2015, but I know many arborists have to educate customers about ol' Billy-Bag-o'-Donuts who thinks a chainsaw and a pickup truck makes him an expert on tree removal and then find out that homeowner's insurance didn't cover Billy's dropping a tree on their house :

Nothing new, ice storm of 98 changed the industry as well. There's a lot of hacky work being done but I haven't noticed an impact on pricing due to a increase in fly-by-night operations. Honestly I don't mind the increase in hacky ash removals, a quarter of the cities trees have died and not everyone can afford a legit tree company. It's when these same hacks then sell a senior citizen on "pruning" their nice oak or maple. That's when having a strong professional presence in the community will make an impact.
