    no more hartford?

I was on the phone with my insurance agent the other day and she told me that Hartford will no longer be offering their arborist program. Said they got rid of the home builders too. Anybody else dealing with this?

    Hiab crane leaking

One of my friends is looking at purchasing a small hiab crane. He ran it for a few minutes and noticed fluid leaking from around the turret which made a descent puddle on the ground. If you guys had to make a guess, what would you say is a possible cause, and how bad is the repair? The truck...

    traveling long distances for work

2 years ago when we did this I blew out a tire on my chipper at 5:30? right before getting onto a highway, luckily we had brought a spare, bottle jacks, and tools. It's basically a paid vacation though. If this was for real money the cost woud be astronomical.

    traveling long distances for work

I'm sure some of you guys have done this before, so I'm looking for your input. A couple of years ago I helped a friend and his father take down a couple of pine trees at the parents' second home, which is roughly 5 hrs from where I live and work. Today I was asked if I could go again, only...

    how to compete

While I understand the idea of making money in volume (1% profit on 1,000,000 vs. 10% on 100,000) I would still love to know how guys like myself who are running 2 - 5 man operations charging a premium are hardly getting by, when other guys who are running crews of 10 - 20 are flourishing with...

    how to compete

This lady called me today to come look at some work at her house, I've done work for her father for a number of years. Remove a BIG locust, some smaller scrub trees, and a black cherry that was maybe 50' tall and 20" diameter? Turns out I also do work for a cousin of the husband. I gave a...

    how to compete

I'm having the same problem. The group I am friends with, we all tend to work around $65 - $95 / man hour. The guys who are getting the jobs are somewhere around $30 - $45 / man hour. The sick part about it is, the undercutters are the ones going around buying new equipment.

Do you give a discount if you take the wood?

One of the big reasons why I don't like leaving wood is that the people tend to want it stacked out in the middle of nowhere. We did a job a few months back where the wood stayed, the guy was gonna split it up for firewood. This was done through a landscaper I work with. Get to the job...

Do you give a discount if you take the wood?

I offer 3 different prices. 1.cheapest: leave wood as it lays in 4 - 8' lengths, it can be moved, not easily, but it can be moved. 2. middle price: get rid of it. third and most expensive; cut and stack in firewood lengths. Sometimes on a small job I will cut up the wood for firewood at no...
