A horrendous thing happened--keep your climbing rope away from the chipper

No news yet on if they've been able to save his leg which was severed below the knee. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-06-29/mans-leg-amputated-by-rope-caught-in-woodchipper/12403122

    30 year old killed

There is absolutely nothing inherently wrong with using a ladder in tree work but like any tool it is a matter if how it is used. A ladder can make some work quicker, safer and easier. They can be used to access past difficult stuff such as vines etc. They do not have to be left in place. Like...

Falling a tree with big old long dead branches

First I know of that. Handy having things in writing I guess sometimes...........

Falling a tree with big old long dead branches

Like that idea--very big tree but if I can get a line up high enough and through all the clutter I'll do that. Pete

Falling a tree with big old long dead branches

What a pearler of a reply Tony--thank-you very much! I'll digest all that. I take the point about doing checks with binoculars, putting some pre-falling shocks into it and choosing the gentlest method for getting it moving. Good ideas. The current fella ought to fall under its own weight. Pete

Falling a tree with big old long dead branches

Tried a whistle--pretty sure it was the Fox 40--and we couldn't hear it over a saw and muffs. The tree is about 25 metres tall and has a hello of lot of old dead wood. Removing a hanger or 2 would be very hard indeed and not address the risk of all the other old dead wood. Thanks everyone for...

Falling a tree with big old long dead branches

I think you misunderstood me Tony. My concern is that at any moment in the falling process vibrations from saw or wedges or the first movement of the whole tree might cause big old branches to fall and how can someone alert the faller to get the hell out fast? Maybe the question is becoming...

Falling a tree with big old long dead branches

It's a common problem it seems to me: how to lessen the risk of being under a freak failure of dead wood while falling a tree. We have tried having a dedicated watcher beside the faller ready to whack faller with a stick if a fast escape is required. Tried a whistle--can't reliably hear it over...

If it's just been serviced assume nothing

If it\'s just been serviced assume nothing After having experienced a nasty incident years ago just after a 40m Cherry Picker / EWP / bucket truck had been serviced another incident I heard of recently which happened after a service on a tower falls into the same category. Incident 2: The...

Re: Here\'s what I wrote to Kong What a fabulous surprise to see all these thoughtful & passionate and oftern beautifully crafted contributions to the thread after a few days of being away from the Buzz! I am so surprised to see Kong's reaction to all this. It's one thing to see them...

    broken ring and funny world

Re: Here\'s what I wrote to Kong I still have not had any reply from Kong--not even an acknowledgement of receipt of my email. They make themselves look even worse to me when they behave like this. I know it can be a tactic to not respond. I'm not saying it is their tactic here but if you...

Re: Here\'s what I wrote to Kong What a marvellous community we have here! I was very happy to see my letter copied and sent and especially happy to see the Dutch take it up independently! Any variations to the letter if you make them can also demonstrate another level of concern. Jay could...

    A monumental loss

Parts of the story are beginning to emerge. It was a tree falling job with a sideways lean and a winch rope attached, together with wedges. The hinge seems to have broken earlier than expected and the tree apparently rotated substantially on the stump and the butt came back over the stump. Poor...

And to Jay..... I am truly sorry to read your story Jay. I am in awe and admiration of your attitude to this. You are not asking for much considering what you have been through and I find that very refreshing. I do hope you can hold off the creditors without it having too much of an adverse...
