I think Norm takes the biscuit on this one...

3 times I ran into shrapnel while removing beech trees in Munich. Bad thing is, once you hits the 1st bits, there are always more to follow.

    Nathan,

How big are the pieces of shrapnel? Can you describe the steel? Was it wrinkled up thin sheets or big globs or thick chunks???

I was working with a guy about five years ago when he hit a carburator with his day old MS460. Not sure what kind of tree it was but it was huge. Someone must have placed it in the codominant crotch 75+ yrs ago.

I found Scooby-Doo today!!! He was about 3 inches tall, had a little key ring on his back, and was chillin' at about 50 feet. It made my day as I was installing 4 cables in my second big elm of the morning.

I've found a coke bottle circa 1930's once in the cavity of a large coast live oak along with a concise history of metal, aluminum, and glass beer cans and bottles from the 70's to the 90's.

Bicycle thrown out of a high-rise into a valley oak.

    Many many frisbees.

    An oil-pan skid plate.

I saw a dead bird which got it's head stuck in a tight branch union (mid-flight)! I laughed when I saw it. [IMG]My lady customer didn't.

Petrified blueberry muffin in a Locust tree. I think a squirrel forgot where it was. [IMG]

Birds or other rotents that climb trees and deposit their debris in the crotches of trees. Amazing. What do you think?
Why do dogs and cats have worms in their fecal matter? Something to think on! Other animals have the same problems in their digestive track. Smaller maybe but critters just the same?

Trees can often grow in on themselves, sometimes with the micro-climate that exsists in the crotch of a tree crotch union.

Read the book The Wild Trees its about the worlds tallest tree. It talks a little about the micro-climate thing. Really great book.

Just read through this thread. Great posts!

I was climbing and came around the trunk and came face to face with the customer's pet iguana! The monster was about 4 inches from my nose. I 'bout fell from my branch!
The customer came out yelling at me to 'save her baby'. She had not noticed that her kids had left the critter out when playing with it.

The thing was about 2 feet long easy.

I have cut through many musket balls

This weekend I found a hub cap embedded in the base of the first crotch, at about 2'. Only a few inches of the edge are still visible.

We've a tree on campus that was hit by a car and a previous tree handler patched the 4 foot long cavity with concrete 20+ years ago. The tree has completely engulfed the mess [CODIT Stage]. Had to have the mason point out which tree, because it has covered so entirely you can only see the outline, and then only if you go looking for it.
