Word is starting to come in about a serious workplace injury in the Quinte region Thursday.

Details are few, however Quinte News has learned emergency crews were called to a Picton area business, where a worker was injured in a wood chipper.

Unconfirmed reports say the mans hand was cut off, however police have not confirmed that detail.

Ornge Air Ambulance officials have confirmed they took a patient from Picton to an Ottawa Hospital for treatment.

They describe the injuries as critical.

The incident happened around 11:00 a.m.

Nothing worse than hearing a fellow arborist/grounds an has been injured, maimed, or died due to a work related misstep. Almost as bad as a family member! Thoughts & prayers for the injured worker & his loved ones. Thanks for the update, Mrtree! Extremely sad news.

WOW! The Marvel of Modern Medicine. Just amazing what Surgeons/Drs can do these days. One minute it's Critical, next it's a long rehab & possibly a full recovery! What are the odds?

It would be an absolute miracle if this worker's hand is returned to 100% usage, unfortunately I doubt even with the best vascular surgeons in the world that this 23 years old's life has not been changed for the worse.

It is amazing though that he can lose a hand and hours later after initial EMT help, a helicopter flight, and surgery he can think about have two hands again.

I truly hope that his employer, fellow employees and others in the local area use the unfortunate incident as a learning experience and springboard from which to begin, or continue, living within a safety culture in which employees safety is counted as the number one priority.

An investigation is continuing, following a serious injury on a job site in The County last month.

On Thursday February 4th, a man was seriously injured following a workplace accident and police described his injuries as critical.

One source to Quinte News suggests a man had his hand severed by a chainsaw, however that has not been confirmed.

The Ministry of Labour says they have several outstanding orders involving Vaughn Contracting, including reporting of a critical injury of a worker to the ministry, guarding the machinery to protect workers using a chainsaw and stopping the work until the guarding order is complied with.

No other details are known at this time.
