Fiddling around with DSRT and DMM Captain

moss

Been here much more than a while
Set up a quick two bridge system on my TM harness and experimented with a double rope system. Worked out pretty well. For this climb I was primarily sharing load on two ropes when I needed the balance and security to get big reach away from the center of two different leaning anchor trees. The DMM Captain was used to get out to a few long limbs/branch ends more efficiently than it would've been. Ideally these could have been rigged to avoid piecing them out but the situation wasn't right for that approach.

I'm completely impressed with the technique you used, AJ, the video was perfect, you looked like a salty dog skipper out there!
(A sea boat Captain) you've got the hook well trained, already. I've got to get my helmet cam figured out, gotta read the destructions, it's a wi-fi that links to my phone, but I can't get it to "discover" one another! Hopefully I'll have it worked out for a huge maple that I need to prune when it stops raining/snowing by this weekend. Hats off to the trimming procedure.

Moss. That was slick. I've heard about guys using loop runners for stability but I've never actually seen it done. Sure seems to make life easier. I've gotta adapt!!! So just a basic question I'm thinking about. Sure two bridges are great but you really could do that with one bridge if you had to couldn't you? Not criticizing but I guess I'm reluctant to disassemble my saddle to add something for a second bridge. I'm digging the captain big time. In that scenario I wonder if it would even work to use the tail of a line to get to the hook. Does the kit come with a bag and if not what size bag will work? Looking for as compact as possible.

Thanks Steve, I read the pamphlet that came with it, Finally! Got it securely mounted to my Kask and went into the settings and got it setup for 1080i for video and synced it with my iPhone so I can do pics and/or video @ the touch of a button. Yeah!!! Who'd of Thunk it!

I just hope it doesn't get hung up in the branches, I thought about getting one of the bullet cams, but this was one of those deals, you just can't pass up! Now I need to learn how to edit all of the profanity and gear throwing tantrums out! Just kidding...[emoji850]

Yeah I was on that group of trees doing more work the next day, sunny and dry, don't think I made a sling footloop once but even on a dry day they make the difference sometimes.

I could've done one bridge, wanted to see what two bridges was like. It was excellent to have the runner and wrench more separated but it brought up new problems like at some point my bridges were rubbing against each other, not cool in the long run.

Yes you could definitely use the tail of your line. It's nice though to have it separate. For example you could be up in the tree and ask a ground worker to tie on the hook and bag, use it and throw it or lower it back down when you knew you wouldn't need it for a while. Kit comes with a small size DMM waterproof bag, very nicely made. The 10mm Sirius line is excellent cordage, very supple. I'm thinking about sewing an eye on the other end of the Sirius line and set that up as a lanyard. So many possibilities. The DMM bag is a cylinder, 7" diameter, 12" tall, has various attachment points inside and outside, and stitched webbing on the outside to attach even more stuff. This is all an evil conspiracy to get people buying even more cool stuff!

That was one of the best things about the Hook Bag, you can attach a bunch of extra gear on all of the loops and webbing slots. I was really blown away with all the attachment spots. Tons of possibilities, just have to watch the weight you add. Great point though AJ

If some wild guy can swing from the hook, We should be able to come up with some really wild videos.

When you have a chance look up the specs for the 10mm Sirius Reep Schnur that comes with the Captain, it's not the strongest cord on the block, min breaking strength 5400 lb., technically it's an accessory cord. One could put a much stronger 10mm line on the hook. Then the question is what's the strength of that small pin on the shackle? The hook itself appears to be ridiculously strong. I'm not a conspiracy theorist but I believe there is a logic to it, something like this: DMM doesn't want people using the hook as a primary anchor, for a variety of reasons. Limiting the strength of the line and the shackle (could have been beefier) is a clear enough message to not use it outside of the described use. Nevertheless it will likely get used as a primary anchor, DMM has covered their liability as much as they can.
