Tips and ideas for implementing a secretary?

I recently hired someone to be a part-time secretary. They are going to take my calls, schedule estimates, schedule jobs, and make sure payments get entered into QuickBooks etc. We are currently working on shifting things over since I've been doing it all myself for the past 13 years or so...

Piece of equipment you should have bought years ago??

Just wondering what you guys would say to this question? For me it is my Gehl Al 20dx articulated loader. I can't believe I did tree work for so long without a loader and a branch manager grapple! As anyone knows who has a mini skid or an articulated loader the labor and time savings are...

Whats the minimal you guys will show up for?

$350 minimum for showing up somewhere with only the crane. Although that is usually for truss work or something like that. (Which I rarely do) $350 does not get you very far if I actually have to use a crane on a tree. That would cover bringing in the crane to put the basket on it to drop a...

Whats the minimal you guys will show up for?

Does that include just grinding a stump? Or cutting down a little tree and shoving it in the chipper and being done in 20 minutes? If so, that's great! Those little jobs hard to make money on unless you can charge you a good minimum! Or do you just not go for the real little jobs? Although I...

How often do you guys turn down jobs?

This sounds like about how often I turn down work if I am very busy. How often do you turn down work for repeat customers or referral customers?

How often do you guys turn down jobs?

Yes, that can be a challenge in my market. The tree work prices are definitely down around here, although they do seem to be slowly coming up. It's not that there is a lack of work necessarily, there just is a lack of people who are willing to pay for good work. You can find people around with...

How often do you guys turn down jobs?

Especially as I get busy it seems easier to turn down jobs that would not be as profitable, or would be a real pain in the butt, or have a very high risk factor. The challenge I run into is repeat customers or referrals having jobs that I really don't want to do... How often do you guys turn...

Do you guys have a lot of breakdowns with your knuckle boom?

My knuckle boom (2006 Effer) seems to have some kind of breakdown every six weeks or so. Usually related to a line blowing. I know mine is a little bit older, but I was wondering if knuckle booms in the tree industry are generally high maintenance for you guys? The repairs are usually not very...

Z133?? OSHA?? What are the actual LAWS?

I believe I understand most of the business end of running my tree service. I guess I am wondering what part of the safety compliance is an actual law and not just a suggestion for best business practices.

Z133?? OSHA?? What are the actual LAWS?

So, I've been thinking about standards and what needs to be done to properly run a tree service by the law. My understanding is the z133 standards are not technically the law. But sometimes OSHA uses them to enforce safety practices... So, what exactly are the laws for running a tree service...

    "One handing" a chainsaw??!!

when you do one cut on top and one cut on the bottom I have heard that referred to as a jump-cut. Are you talking about one cut on one side and one on the other side and then put the saw down and break the branch off by hand?

    "One handing" a chainsaw??!!

That is what I am talking about, doing the things that I know should be done right. And yes, my main worker carries his own liability insurance and has his own company.
